I have been waiting to do this all day. I am gonna rip DashCon a new one. I restrained myself pretty well at the con but I can’t bite my tongue any more.
Scathing, probably really angry, DashCon review under the cut!
For starters when we got there last night to pick up our badges all was going well. Then at around 9:15 we staff members rushing up to us telling us the con needs money asap or it will be shut down. This was not even a half hour after I paid for my freaking badge. I kinda stared at her like she was from freaking Mars because I have NEVER heard of this happening. I have been attending cons for 10 years and this has never been within the realm of possibilities for me. I didnt take it seriously until we were all herded like farm animals into the main ballroom.
Which was creepy because I thought they were rounding us up to kill us but ok.
Then they started going on about how they needed $17000 by 10pm. We all originally got told the hotel was not happy with what this con actually was. Which ok, I understand costumed geeks can be a bit scary but I’ve done cons much larger than this and this was SO tame. We were fed this lie for the better part of the hour it took to raise $17000.
We did it! The con was saved! People sang in the ballroom! Which was…ok…kinda fun. I’m a sap for the “we came together for a thing” bs. The idea didn’t sit right with me though. It seemed so suspicious. They collected money in a bag. No one asked for IDs, no one asked for an email. Nothing. Allegedly money will be returned if you paid with paypal but you are shit outta luck really if you paid cash. Good luck.
The truth behind all this was the con and hotel originally agreed to pay up after the con. The hotel did not like how this con was going so they then demanded money up front. Which is kind of hilarious that the con didnt actually have that money yet? Like why rent out space if you dont have the money. I dont go work in the artist alley and hope I make enough money to pay for my hotel room that weekend. Thats not how it works!
But it gets better.
So I get up a 8am on a Saturday to haul as back to DashCon because OMG its NIGHT VALE DAY. My friends and I were excited. We dressed up and were prepared to celebrate the birthday of the most special person in my life right now. It was so exciting. Second row seats! We got seated at a decent time. Noon rolled around and we all waited. 12:30 rolled around and we still waited and eventually someone came out to tell us Night Vale was here! Then time dragged on. Then someone tried to order pizzas for 300 people. Then we got the news. Night Vale was leaving. They were not paid beforehand. When money finally appeared it was cash and a paypal transfer offer. I wouldnt be shocked if this con didn’t have a dime to their name.
I was denied refunds for my Night Vale ticket and my Saturday badge. I was put on an email list for Night Vale refunds (the list which my name was SUPPOSED to be on when I bought my ticket but was gone) so I got to write it down for them to I’m sure lose at some point over the weekend.
Their best compensation was extra time in the ball pit and another day to spend at the con. Which are both god damn stupid ideas. I dont wanna play in your shitty deflated ball pit. I dont wanna return for another day at your shitty ass convention. This con was a complete scam.
I am really REALLY angry at how this con was handled. I wanna yell and kick and scream. I have been to first year cons that turned out great. This was the exact opposite. Its crazy to me that DashCon didn’t pay for their space up front. Its crazy that they didn’t pay the main attraction up front.
I do not EVER want this con to come back. DashCon, please do not return next year. Let it die. No one will miss you.
And another thing. Everyone on tumblr needs to shut the actual fuck up about there being a “tumblr con”. Seriously. What it basically was was a fandom con. Which was what 90% of anime cons are these days anyway. So you can fuck right off.
I will give the attendees props for being ultra nice to one another throughout this con. Which isnt even a big deal because thats how my con experiences are anyway.
Oh and I guess its nice that I get to live and share my experience and bask in the memes that this shitfest has spawned.
